About the Artist: Arthur John Black (1855-1936) is a well
listed landscape and portrait artist who
worked in both oil and watercolour. He studied
in Paris at the Academie des Beaux Arts under
the noted artist Benjamin Constant. He exhibited
at the Royal Academy 36 times, and the Royal
Institute of Oil Painters 54 times. He was
a member of both the New Society of Painters
in Watercolours and the Royal Institute of
Painters in Oil. He lived in Nottingham in
1884, London 1890 and Dorset from 1931 to
his death in 1936. A number of his works
can be seen in the Castle Museum & Gallery
in Nottingham, The Gurnsey Museum of Art,
and in many private and public galleries.
Arthur Black watercolours usually sell at
auction for a few hundred pounds. His oil
paintings realize much higher prices with
one large example making £6,000 at Christies in London in 2005.
