During the First World War, Bone acted as an official war artist, and his drawings and watercolours of the Somme Battlefield executed in 1916 are amongst the most moving images of the war. In 1917 he worked with the Grand Fleet, and a selection of both series were subsequently published as TheWestern Front and With the Grand Fleet. Between the wars Bone worked extensively in Europe, visiting Spain, France, Holland and Italy and producing not only drawings but also etchings. During the 1939-45 war he acted as an official War Artist. Muirhead Bone and James McBey are amongst the finest Scottish draughtsmen of their period. - from The Dictionary of SCOTTISH PAINTERS 1600-1960.
