About the Painting: Very good condition. The old stretcher bears a stenciled number - probably affixed by an auctioneer. An outstanding British Modern painting.

About the Artist: Born in London, Bratby was a painter, novelist and teacher. He studied at Kingston School of Art and the Royal College of Art and was a prolific exhibitor throughout his life - painting over 1,500 portraits alone by 1991, when the National Portrait Gallery staged a retrospective of his work.
