James Fairman (American)
1826-1904

Description: "Thames River Barge, London," watercolor, unsigned, 7" x 10.3", 11" x 15.4" frame.

Condition:Excellent condition.

Biography: Written verso are the words "by J... Fairman," apparently a notation by the framer. There may be a signature under the mat, but since it's very old we have preferred to not remove it - at this time. The frame is gilded wood. The painting dates from the period that James Fairman (American), 1826-1904, was in Europe - he was in Stratford on Avon in 1874. We have not managed to find examples of his drawings, though he is given credit for working on paper. It is also said that he taught George Herbert McCord who excelled in the medium of watercolor and pastel. Since the evidence is circumstantial, at best, we price this work accordingly - a fine example of mid-19th century watercolor in the English tradition.
