About the Artist: Born in Glasgow where he studied before going to Paris to train under Dagnan-Bouveret and Aime Morot. In 1884, he joined Guthrie, Henry, Crawhall and Melville at Cockburnspath. His landscapes have a rugged quality and his best work is of fishing villages with people gathered on the quays. He worked in oil, pastel and watercolour, his nocturnes being amongst his most sensitive work. His paintings were appreciated aborad; he became a member of the Munich Secession and won a prize at the 1897 International Exhitition in Munich. He was a close friend of the Glasgow Boys, but his paintings stand outside the mainstream of the School, possibly lacking their originality.
