Very good condition: Original gilded hardwood frame, with original french mat. A few unatrusive spots of foxing were on the painting when acquired in 1970. The mat has water damage in the lower right corner. Bears the label, verso, of Doig, Wilson, & Wheatley, Hutchison's Edinburgh framer and agent whose labels appear on most of his paintings.
Gemmell Hutchison ws a genre painter in oil and water-colour. Born at Edinburgh where he was also educated. After first of all working as a seal engraver he took up art, studying at the Board of Manufacturers' School. Exhibited at the R.S.A from 1879 and the R.A. 1881. Elected R.S.W. 1895, A.R.S.A. 1901 and R.S.A. 1911. Lived in Edinburgh. Source - Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950 by Grant M. Waters.
