Biography: Max Ludby was a Cookham landscape and genre painter and engraver. He studied in Antwerp between 1882 and 1884 and was an active exhibitor from as early as 1879, showing at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Grosvenor Gallery, London Salon, Society of British Artists, Fine Art Society, Dudley Gallery, Dowdeswell Galleries and Agnew and Sons Gallery. He also exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. He was elected a member of the Society of British Artists in 1886, the year in which JW Turner was appointed its President. Ludby was amongst those members who resigned in 1888 in support of Turner , whose resignation was enforced. In 1891 he entered the membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. In 1893 he exhibited a series of 82 watercolours entitled From Oxford to Greenwich at Dowdeswells and in 1897 a series of 60 watercolours entitled Some Sketches of Venice at Dickinson and Foster's. His oil paintings include A Berkshire Common, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1888, and An Old Shepherd, exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1893.
