Miller, William (Scottish)
fl. 1920-40

Windy Day on the Cornish Coast, watercolor/gouache, signed l/l,
18" x 27.5" sight, 22" x 31.5" frame.

Excellent Condition. The complimentary frame is believed to be original to the painting, c. 1935, and bears an Aitken Dott label. Aitken Dott, now known at The Scottish Gallery, was established in South St. David Street, Edinburgh by Aitken Dott in 1842. Since their founding, the Gallery has featured works of Scotland's foremost contemporary painters, and they may have represented William Miller (a question could probably be easily answered simple by asking!). I found this watercolor in a used furniture shop, overlooking the Dean Village, Edinburgh, in the early 1970s. It had a label for a local storage company and judging by the fine condition may have languished there for many years before being acquired by the furniture dealer. It's part of my personal collection, but I will consider an offer not too far below my list price.

William Miller is less well known than his contemporaries, though the quality of his work is equal if not superior to most. His work appeared with some consistency in Edinburgh during the 1970s, when I lived there. He may have been an aspiring artist who did not survive WWII, as all of his paintings I've seen were executed prior to 1939. He is known to have painted seascapes, landscapes and allegorical subjects in watercolor and gray wash - also pen and ink. The draftsmanship of his work was outstanding.

All art is priced without respect to the frame (when applicable).
We don't judge a book by its cover, so why should we judge a painting or print by its frame. A cropped image is included for every listing, allowing the prospective buyer to imagine their own frame. Re-framing can be costly, but if a quality piece of art can be purchased for a reasonable price, the cost of a new frame could enhance both the the aesthetic and financial value of a painting. Most art dealers price paintings without consideration for the frame (though there are exceptions - some antique frames are collectors items in their own right).
