Pease, William J. (American)
20th Century

Portrait of Johnny Carson, oil crayons on paper,
19 1/2" x 15 1/2" sight, 23 1/2" x 19 1/2" frame.

About the Painting: This painting was previously described as in "excellent" condition. I received an offer for the painting and before concluding the transaction discovered it had some water damage which went undetected after a leak in my storage area a few years ago. The painting is still available, but I will need to examine it out of the frame and revise the condition statement.

About the Artist: Pease received his first formal art instruction at Pratt Institute in New York City where he earned his undergraduate degree. Subsequently, he held a teaching assistantship from the University of South Florida while completing his masters degree program in art. Worked for Walt Disney Productions before continuing his studies at the Ecole Des Beuax Arts in Paris. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Art Students League of New York where he won the Anco Wood Foundation Merit Scholarship. He was a member of the Portrait Club of New York and a staff member of the National Portrait Seminar Studio at 416 West 56th Street, NY, NY. - information provided on a printed bio provided with the painting by the previous owner.

Note: This painting could have been a private sitting, but it might also have been done at a street kiosk - or from a photograph. Other than the bio provided by the previous owner, we have been unsuccessful in establishing biographical information about this artist. We have found a writer with the name, and discovered the obituary of another William J. Pease ("William was born on February 1, 1957 and passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010. William was a resident of Gainesville, Florida.") We shall appreciate any information that will enable us to explain the origins of this painting.
