J. Ambrose Prichard (American)
1858 - 1905

An Afternoon on the Rhone, oil on canvas, signed/dated 1886/inscribed "Avignon" lower right,
40" x 55" canvas, 50" x 65" frame.

About the Painting: Very good condition. Some crazing (crackleture), but the paint is stable with only a few tiny flakes of missing paint (requiring very close examination). There has been a professional repair of a puncture in the upper right hand corner. This is a seminal painting by an important artist whose work has not been adequately researched.

About the Artist: A specialist in watercolor painting, J. Ambrose Pritchard was born in Boston in 1858. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre from 1881 to 1887. It's conceivable this painting was his Diploma work for the Academie, given the inscribed date..

After returning to Boston about 1889, he painted landscapes and marines, working along the Massachusetts shore in Duxbury, Annisquam, and Quincy and in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His exhibited at the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, the Boston Art Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

His career was cut short by his untimely death in 1905.

Provenance: A Newbury Street Gallery, 1978 (gallery label verso); A Marblehead Estate, 1978 to 2008; Skinners Auctioneers 2008. (The painting was consigned to Skinner's for a May 2008 auction with an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000 (the high auction price for the artist is $29,000 for a painting also sold by Skinner's), but the reserve was not met. We negotiated a private purchase from the consignor late in 2008.)
