1832 - 1894.
Description: Rest and Refreshment, watercolor, signed
l/l, 16.50" x 10.5" unframed.

Biography: Born Birmingham, he studied silversmithing
at Birmingham School of Art and later worked

to study Renaissance sculpture and metalwork.
Always a Romantic, he joined Garibaldi and
the Red Shirts, and fell in love with Clara
Gamgee, the daugher of a well-known Edinburgh

richly coloured watercolours. His subjects
were taken from history and literature, especially
Shakespeare. He was an excellent anatomical
draughtsman, teaching at the RSA Life Schools
and illustrating John Gamgee's book on the
horse. He was a close friend of Sam Bough,
and exhibited widely - including 68 paintings
at the Royal Scottish Academy. Died in Edinburgh.
