Biography: Born Birmingham, he studied silversmithing at Birmingham School of Art and later worked for Elkington's, who sent him to Florence to study Renaissance sculpture and metalwork. He followed her back to Edinburgh and, despite parental opposition, they married and settled there. He produced statues and designs for decorative friezes as well as richly coloured watercolours. His subjects were taken from history and literature, especially Shakespeare. He was an excellent anatomical draughtsman, teaching at the RSA Life Schools and illustrating John Gamgee's book on the horse. He was a close friend of Sam Bough, and exhibited widely - including 68 paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy. Died in Edinburgh. - extracted from The Dictionary of Scottish Painters 1600 - 1960, Harris and Halsby.
