About the Painting: This painting is in very good condition. There is some loss of paint along the edges where the canvas was rubbed by an earlier frame, otherwise there is no damage. A superb example of Alice Stoddard's portraiture. Regrettably, the subject is unknown, but this painting will add richness and impact to any collection of American 20th Century art.

About the Artist: Born in Watertown, Connecticut, Alice Stoddard was a landscape, portrait, and marine painter. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. In 1948, she married artist Joseph Pearson.

During World War I, Stoddard did battlefield drawings and paintings while serving with the YMCA in France. She spent many summers on Monhegan Island, Maine, painting bold colorful landscapes. In Philadelphia, she painted portraits of numerous luminaries such as Federal and Supreme Court judges. She was a frequent exhibitor with the National Academy of Design and
was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1938. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (prizes 1911,1913, Gold Medal 1926), the Corcoran Gallery Biennials , the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco(1915), the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia(1926), the National Academy of Design (1917 medal,1928 medal) the Philadelphia Art Club (1913 prize, 1916 Gold Medal), the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Albright Gallery of Art in Buffalo, the Brooklyn Museum, the Wilmington Art Club, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Woodmere Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, among others.Her work is included in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Delano Art Museum, and Reading (Pa.) Museum. A portrait of Beatrice Fox Griffith of Haverford West, Pennsylvania, painted in 1949 is in the ciollection of the Alderney Library, Alderney, Channel Isles.
