Newton, Marion Cleever Whiteside (American)
1902 - ?

Belfast House, oil on board,
10" x 14" sight,
12" x 16" frame.

About the Painting: Very good condition; original glazed frame.

House with gray shutters, oil on canvas, unsigned,
16" x 24" sight, 22.5" x 30" frame.

About the Painting: Very good condition, but would benefit from a light clean and varnish.

About the Artist: Painter, illustrator, designer and craftsperson. Born Boston; studied at Radcliffe, Parsons School of Design and in Paris under I. Olinsky, L. F. Emmet and G. Bridgman. The artist exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais, Paris, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, New York Watercolor Club, Philadelphia Watercolor Club, Baltimore Watercolor Club, and the National Arts Club in New York. By 1947, her work was held by the MET and the Museum, City of New York. Like many artists of the period, her paintings rarely appear in the market.

Belfast House was signed Marion C. Whiteside '38 and was framed by F. J. Harris & Son of Bath, England. Presumably, it was shown in England and returned with the artist to the United States after her studies in France. The House with gray shutters has an old tag from Hyannis Auction Rooms, Dick Bourne, and the lot number 123A. While the latter painting is unsigned, both paintings appear to be by the same hand, and we are confident of our attribution.
