40" x 55" canvas, 50" x 65" frame.
About the Painting: Very good condition. Some crazing (crackleture), but the paint is stable with only a few tiny flakes of missing paint (requiring very close examination). There has been professional restoration e in the upper right hand corner.
About the Artist: A specialist in watercolor painting, J. Ambrose Pritchard was born in Boston in 1858. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre from 1881 to 1887
After returning to Boston about 1889, he painted landscapes and marines, working along the Massachusetts shore in Duxbury, Annisquam, and Quincy and in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His exhibited at the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, the Boston Art Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Provenance: A Newbury Street Gallery, 1978 (gallery label verso); A Marblehead Estate, 1978 to 2008; Skinner's Auctioneers 2008. ( It was consigned to Skinner's for a May 2008 auction with an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000 but the reserve was not realized. It was purchased subsequently from that consignor late in 2008.) The record price for the artist is $29,000 for a painting sold by Skinner's.
Note: This is a seminal painting, in a French frame, and is possibly Prichard's Diploma work for the Academie Julian.
